Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan–ATLAS) was one of the most memorable sights in the sky in 2024, a rare visitor from the distant Oort Cloud that swept into the inner solar system and briefly became bright enough to capture the attention of astronomers and skywatchers around the world. It passed closest to the Sun on September 27, 2024, and made its closest approach to Earth on October 12, 2024, at roughly 44 million miles away. At its best, it developed the kind of long, dramatic dust tail that makes comets feel less like ordinary solar system objects and more like fleeting cosmic events.
